Free Music (good stuff, I promise) Monday, Jan 5 2009

Our church, Sojourn, has now released a handful of CDs.  The most recent came out a year ago and featured eight Advent/Christmas songs.  The album is available for free download or pay-what-you-want.  I highly recommend them, even though we’re past Christmas now.  Only three of them sound like traditional Christmas songs anyway.  And I promise that there are no strings attached to it–it’s truly free if you enter five emails addresses (I know, because I did it to get the free downloads).  You can also hop over to Sojourn Music to hear samples or check out our other CDs.  Enjoy!

Unfortunately, I can’t get the widget to embed, so just go here to get the free downloads:-)

Travel Blog Friday, Jan 2 2009

Our church has just launched a new blog you can view here.  The blog is written primarily by our lead pastor, Daniel Montgomery,  for the new BC series (understanding what a Christian does with the Old Testament) our church is going through this year beginning Jan. 4th.  It also has two other parts–upcoming conferences and events and a community life section.  It is a really excellent tool for anyone to use, so check it out!

Shout Out for Elder’s Wives Friday, Sep 19 2008

I have been studying Acts for the past couple of months now, so the Holy Spirit and His work in us has been on my mind a lot.  This morning I was reading Acts 20 when Paul is talking to the elders at the church of Ephesus.  In verse 28, he says,

Be on guard for yourselves and for all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood.

The part that hit me hardest this morning was the reminder that the Holy Spirit, not man, made these men overseers of their flock.  The same is true today.  We should have confidence knowing our elders are in that position because the Holy Spirit put them there.

Then I began thinking about their wives.  They also were given to these men through the Holy Spirit, and though often forgotten, they have a tough job.  The elders’ wives at Sojourn are continually giving of themselves, serving their husbands sacrificially every day so our elders can be freed up to serve their flock as faithfully as possible.  These women do most of their work in the background but work harder than most in the church.  I was reflecting on each of the six women who fulfill this role at Sojourn and was filled with joy as I could see how God has used them in my life alone, knowing how vital they are to the spiritual health of our church.  My dear friend Karen (who coincidentally is one of our elders’ wives) has shared with me more than once the importance of encouraging others to their faces, and though this isn’t technically face to face, I want to publically praise our Savior for the work He is doing in each of their lives.  Some I know better than others, but all have been part of my spiritual growth.

Karen Cheong–I could write a book here.  This beautiful woman is the one every woman wants to be her mentor.  She is the epitome of biblical womanhood.  I have often prayed God would teach me to love my husband, children, and others in the way Karen loves.  She is possibly one of the busiest women alive, but when I have called on her, she has often dropped everything to meet my need.  This woman knows how to encourage!  She has taught me more in the brief moments I have had with her than I could ever learn from a book.

Sarah Cosper–Is there anyone who has a sweeter spirit?  This lady loves every person she meets unconditionally, and she always has a kind word to say.  She is an amazing example of humility.  She dearly loves her husband and daughter and is regularly public about her affection for them.  No corrupting talk comes from her mouth, but only talk that is good for building others up.

Amy Ems–Pure wit.  She can help you see the funny side of most things in life.  I have shed many tears of laughter while listening to Amy talk about, well, basically anything.  How we need people that have the gift of bringing joy to those around them!  Another side of Amy, though, is her willingness to be vulnerable.  She is not too proud to admit she is a sinner and has encouraged me through her example to practice humility by “laying it all out there.”

Ginger Lewis–I have never seen Ginger without a gorgeous, joy-filled smile on her face.  There have been times I have felt down or discouraged until I was warmed by her welcome.  She treats no one like they are a stranger but like they are the one person she was hoping to see that day.  I have to admit that I love watching her when Chad preaches.  Her face shows so much adoration for him.  I pray God continues to challenge me to respect my husband as Ginger openly respects and loves hers.

Mandy Montgomery–Superwoman!  This mother of three small children seems like she can do it all.  She has many talents, but she constantly puts herself aside to fulfill her first role as helpmate to her husband.  She is selfless and a hard, hard worker, working with joy for the Lord.  She is filled with wisdom and grace.  Mandy is also extremely gifted in hospitality (her husband publicly praises her for it), and she has taught me much about what true hospitality is.  I have grown largely in this area over the past several months, mainly due to a conversation I had with Mandy a while back.

Chandi Plummer–Wisdom.  She is the kind of woman you just want to be around.  For one, she’s just fun!  She has a very optimistic personality and is always reminding me of the power I have in Christ to do all things.  Talk about gospel-centered!  Though Chandi is not my “official” mentor, I don’t think I’ve ever talked to her, even for short periods of time, without growing spiritually.  She is always ready with a word of wisdom or encouragement.  She is also an amazing example of how to be a God-fearing mother, pointing her daughters to the good news day in and day out.

I praise God for each of these women!  How richly He has blessed me and our church through His work in them.

Animal Sacrifices? Wednesday, Dec 19 2007

I lead children’s worship at church every couple of months or so.  It’s always interesting any time you ask kids questions, but I thought one particular Sunday was more interesting than usual.  We were teaching a new song written by a member of Sojourn called “Everything You Do.”  The point of the song is to try to show kids how all they do should be done for Christ (i.e. washing dishes, doing puzzles, etc.).  At the end of the song you ask, “What kind of things do you do?” and let the kids respond.  It had been going well until I called on one little boy whose response was “I sacrificed my cat.”  By God’s grace, I realized he might not have meant what it seemed like he meant, so I avoided a look of horror on my face.  A much flustered Courtney stammered quite a bit, tried to quickly make a decision, and started to go with it (I am never good when I have to think on my toes).  Thankfully, two teachers in the back who were thinking clearly quickly shouted “NO!”  Coming back to my senses, I stopped and began to explain how sacrificing our cats isn’t really something we should do for Christ. :-)   We asked for a different response and laughed much about it after the kids had gone.

Note:  The little boy’s cat had just died the week before and that was his way of saying he had let him go.  :-)   Praise God I didn’t treat him like he was totally whacked out!  Kids are hard, no matter what some people say.

Biblical Masculinity Wednesday, Dec 12 2007

I know it’s a little strange for me to write a post with this title, but I wanted to encourage each of you to listen to one of our pastors, Daniel Montgomery’s, sermon from this past Sunday.  He is doing a series on biblical manhood and womanhood, and focused on the dudes this week.  Though it was addressing manhood, I didn’t stop talking about it with Bill until 10:30 last night.

Here are a few things I really found helpful:

1)  Pointing out how masculine Jesus was even though our society tries to make him extremely feminine.

2)  Seeing how unappealing chuch is for many men because of the lack of masculinity shown by most church-going males.

3)  Learning how to see my son’s aggression as a good thing that was given to him by God and looking at some ways to help him direct that energy for good, not evil.

4)  Being brought to tears once again as I praise God for giving me a husband who is truly a manly man, which equals being a godly man.

Two Homes In One Day! Thursday, Sep 27 2007

Yesterday was a day of beautiful blessings for us (as every day is).  When Bill got home from work, we left for the lawyer’s office and closed on our first house!  We have been praying for a house for more than three years, and God gave it to us to yesterday.  Praise the Lord!  When we got in the car, Bill prayed a prayer of thanksgiving, and I loved something he said.  “I praise you God for letting us borrow Your house for a while.  Give us grace to be good stewards and use the house to further Your kingdom.”  I pray I always remember this house is really God’s to do with as He wills.

A couple of hours later, we went to church for our interview with one of our elders.  This was our last step to becoming partners (members) of Sojourn.  The interview really helped us think about different aspects of the gospel and encouraged us greatly.  We have been challenged to become more intentional missionaries in our home, so I plan on doing some posts in the future sharing what we are doing in that area.  At the end of the interview he told us he had no problems nominating us for partnership, so we got our church home, too!

It is extremely important to Bill and me to daily pray for and encourage our leadership in our church, so I’ll mention something as a side note.  We were thankful to be interviewed by the elder who is our main preaching pastor, Daniel Montgomerey.  We got to share with him how we came to Sojourn because of his inability to get away from the gospel in his preaching.  This man’s preaching is saturated with the grace that has been shown us by our Savior’s substitution for us on the cross.  Besides my hubby, :-)  Daniel is my favorite preacher to listen to.  You should listen to at least one of his sermons on Sojourn’s website.  You will be greatly convicted and encouraged by what the Holy Spirit says through him Sunday after Sunday.  This man is bold yet full of grace, and we are so grateful the Lord put us under his and our other elders’ leadership.

Sojourn Music Friday, Sep 7 2007

I wanted to encourage you all to check out a website about our church’s music.  There are ways you can listen to some of the amazing, gospel-centered music Sojourn does each week, along with info about the songs and the five C.D.s Sojourn has put out.  The C.D.s are made entirely of songs written by members of the church and make up a large portion of the music we sing each week as part of our corporate worship.  There are also several other links on the page to a variety of things like articles about worship.  Our church is full of unbelievable talent.  We are so blessed to be a part of such a gospel-centered church, and we are especially blessed to have our pastor of worship arts ministry, Mike Cosper. He does much hard work each week planning our services and proctoring the music and lyrics to help make our corporate worship one that is a constant reminder of the grace that has been shown to us, and the life we can now have as a result of Christ taking our sins upon Himself and receiving the wrath of God we all deserve.
