Selling Our House Saturday, Sep 12 2009

So, after living in our house for two years, we have decided to sell and move into an apartment.  The reason–we had no idea how difficult it would be to do maintenance on a home when you have four children as young as ours.  Bill and I moved into our home knowing it was a fixer-upper and loving the idea of the whole thing.  We  had done some of this kind of thing in the past, but that was pre-children.  We didn’t realize (for whatever reason) that either all home improvements would have to be done after the children went to bed, making for late nights and more tired days, or that they would have to be done while the kids were awake (chaos!), making us miss out on time with them.  We don’t like either option.  Also, God has put us in some different roles with our church, which adds some time and responsibility on our plate.  Basically, we feel as though our home is interfering with our family and ministry instead of serving them, and that ain’t right.

Yesterday we officially put our house on the market.  The goal is to rent for three years or so to give us ample time to save money either to buy a house that is more “ready” for our family or pay someone else to do needed improvements.  Please pray for a few things for our family.  Pray that we have a buyer before the end of November.  Pray that apartments we desire to rent are available when we need them.  Pray that this will indeed free Bill and me up so we can serve in a way that pleases God.  And pray for wisdom in the decisions we have to make in the weeks ahead.  Thanks friends and family.

Fourth of July Fun Tuesday, Jul 7 2009

We just got back from one of our best weekends ever!  We spent our time with some dear, dear friends who live way up north in Ohio.  Seriously, these are some of the sweetest friends we have ever been blessed to have.  My beautiful friend and mom of three boys, Kacie, just blogged about the trip and put up several pictures.  You can go see them here.

We are having to detox this week from seeing them, and I keep trying to convince Bill we should move up there.  Maybe he’s saying no because we were offered pop every day, maybe it’s because my accent has become more northern already, or maybe it’s just because as much as he would love to live right by this family, he knows God has called us here for this time.  Regardless of his reasoning, we all miss them terribly and look very forward to next fourth of July.

Happy Birthday, Court! Saturday, Feb 7 2009

All right, everyone–join with me (i.e. leave a comment) in wishing my lovely bride a happy brithday!!!

Baby 4 Update Wednesday, Dec 3 2008

We have had several friends ask for a pregnancy update, so here’s the pretty non-interesting scoop.  I had my first OB visit last week and my ultrasound yesterday.  I am 21 weeks along with a due date of April 15th–a tax baby.  I had been worried before my visit because I hadn’t felt baby yet.  My midwife had a difficult time finding the heartbeat but finally found a good, strong, beautiful one.  She said most likely my placenta is in a different position this time which would explain the difficulty in both finding the heartbeat and me feeling Baby.  The next day I began feeling him (we call them all him’s), though faintly.  Our ultrasound yesterday gave more assurance that all was good.  Baby was very active and had all parts.  It was the first time we were tempted to find out the sex, but we stood firm.  :-)   It’s always amazing to get to see your child while he is still in the womb.  What a miracle!  Thank you all for praying for us and loving us.  We look forward to introducing you all to our new little one in April.

September Family Update Sunday, Sep 7 2008

So, Court’s always written these in the past, but now you get me and I’m probably not as detailed as she is.  Nonetheless, here we go (and yes, there are pictures at the end):

As of this month, a lot has changed for me in terms of my involvement at Sojourn.  We just started a new community group, which is only the second one in Southern Indiana.  It’s pretty exciting for us for a number of reasons.  First, we finally have a group that’s close to our house (if it weren’t for a lack of sidewalks, we could easily walk there).  Second, this is really the first time I’ve stepped into any kind of leadership role since stepping down at Cedar Grove.  This is a relatively small role (which I’m glad for) and volunteer (which I’m also glad for) in which I get to enjoy meeting with others and seek after Christ together through fellowship, discussion, and prayer.  I’m pretty stoked about it and the two meetings we’ve had so far have been truly enjoyable.  Third, it’s part of a movement to reach out to Sojourn members who live here and to start ministering to the needs of this particular area.  Fourth, it’s always great to have a group of believers with which to grow in grace.  Also, I’m going to start being involved with the music at Sojourn.  I’ll be playing piano next week, which I haven’t done anything like this in almost two years!  Also, Court and I will together be leading the music for some of our quarterly member’s meetings, which should be a truly great experience as well.  As for work, more of the same, but that’s good as God has granted me a great job (even if I lose sight of that sometimes).  Funny story: I really can’t think of one right now.

Courtney has also had several changes going on.  In addition to the two things I listed above (about leading a community group and being involved in music at Sojourn) she’s also getting started with more in-depth mentoring at Sojourn.  God has graced Courtney with a great deal of varied experience and knowledge in marriage and parenting that I have seen bless several other women.  I’m very pleased to see her putting her grace gifts to use in this way.  She also just started preschooling Liam last week, which was a total blast for her and Liam.  We’ve been gearing up for this for a while and Court has embraced it wholeheartedly, for which I am incredibly grateful.  Incidentally, not only is Liam in “school” here at home, but Ariana and Esther are getting some instruction in the day as well.  And Court’s pregnant!  :-)   The due date (we think) should be sometime in April.  Funny story: Courtney and I were pretty tired last night, so I told her (playfully) we should aim to be asleep by 8:45.  While we were in bed reading, she read a funny part of her book to me and then within seconds, she fell asleep.  I looked up at the clock: 8:44:33!

Like I said, Liam just starting preschool with Courtney last week and he loves it.  He loves to tell me all about everything he did during the day.  Also, with Liam being the little organized dude that he is, he thrives having the kind of super-structured schedule that Court has set up for him and it’s been good for him.  I’m excited to see how he’ll continue to develop as Courtney teaches him about God and the world he created.  And talk about cute, Liam had his first soccer game yesterday.  Sadly, he was a little tired and a little confused by the whole thing, so he mainly just stood in the middle of the field and looked around at all the parents surrounding the small field.  We also think he was a little intimidated by so many adults all around him.  I’m pumped about taking some time this week to practice with him at the field down the street so he can get a little more used to the whole thing.  And Liam is also Potty-trained now, which is rockin’ awesome.  Finally got one of these kids out of diapers…  Funny story: Tonight, Liam was dawdling over his supper and I knew that if he didn’t eat more, he would be telling us that he was hungry within ten minutes of clearing the table. So I said to him, “Liam, you need to finish eating now or forever hold your peace.”  He replied by picking up one of the pieces of food on his plate and saying, “I wanna hold this piece.”

Ariana is growing into more and more of a cutie every day.  She’s getting faster, growing longer hair (finally), and, if possible, becoming more and more girly all the time–you should see how she oh-so-delicately brushes aside the hair from her eyes.  She’s really hit a booming point with language and is communicating extremely well with us.  Her enunciation is vastly improving and she’s forming some pretty complex sentences.  She’s also found that she likes this one particular hat (looks a little like a fisher’s hat) and was quite determined to have it on all day today.  Funny story: Ariana has heard Courtney calling her cute and she’s picked up saying the word now that she’s repeating so much of what we say.  Tonight at supper (it was a funny meal all around), she looked at Courtney and announced “I’m cute!”  While we burst into fits of laugher, she looked at us with a slightly confused look as if she didn’t know why we were laughing and asked, “What?”  Priceless…

Esther is definitely discovering her voice and is using it with all her might.  It’s hard to imagine such a little body making such a racket, but she does quite well for herself.  Perhaps she’s just trying to insure that she’s heard over her rather noisy brother and sister.  Esther is still working on sitting on her own (not quite there yet), though she is quite accomplished at rolling and turning and grabbing things to stick in her mouth.  Like all of our kids, her smile is incredibly beautiful and she charms her daddy all the time with it.  Funny story: As I said, she’s quite good at rolling and turning.  We have now gone in several mornings to find that Esther has wiggled herself out of her gown and is only in her diaper, which is rather impressive since that makes her our only child that can successfully undress herself without any assistance from us.

Last thing: we’re totally pumped about our first ever family vacation that’s coming up in a couple of weeks.  We’re going to be hanging out in Indianapolis, which should be an ultra blast.

All right, that’s all I have to say.  Here are the pictures:

Pictures Tuesday, Jul 22 2008

Bill and I were reminiscing today, looking back at pictures on the blog.  We realized two things, though.  We really don’t have any pictures of Esther that actually look like her, and we don’t have any pictures of us, so here are a few for your viewing pleasure (if you like them, that is).

Yes, We’re Still Here Thursday, Apr 17 2008

So, we have somewhat disappeared for a while and I’m sorry about that.  If you’re wondering where we’ve been, just scroll back a few posts to “Meet Esther” and you’ll see why.  Having that third child (especially a nursing infant) has certainly added to the family busyness and responsibilites, especially for Courtney who is home with the kiddos every day.  So, we would love to have your prayers in that.  God has been kind to show his faithfulness in being so good to us, but it doesn’t stop us from having rather full days.

Having said that, some recent technological upgrades in our home will hopefully assist us in getting back to blogging a bit.  I know Court has already written some drafts that only need a final revision before posting.  And I’m planning on writing some more in the future, as well.  Some of those will be a brief sketch on defining the emerging/emergent church (which is really no easy task), some more study on prayer, new pics of the family (always a hit), and ways you can pray for each of us.

So, keep sticking with us.  We’ll be around more soon to update you on the family and share our hearts with you.  Thanks for your patience!

My Christmas Present Thursday, Dec 20 2007

Our friend Rachel blessed us yesterday with a night out while she watched the kids.  As many of you know, we are in need of a van so we have room for three car seats.  Bill has been trying to figure out if it would be best to trade in our Chevy Lumina or to sell it for parts (it’s barely drivable).  He found a place we could sell it that he thought would be the best value, so he asked Rachel to come over a little earlier to give us time to take the car to the buyer.  I was following behind him talking to him on the cell phone (we were on a date, remember) when he pulled into the business.  I was already driving in the parking lot before I looked to see where we were.  The sign said Enterprise Car Sales.  I experienced a moment of absolute bewilderment because I knew we were planning on purchasing our van from Enterprise, and I knew we weren’t going to start looking for a couple more months.  I got out of the car to see my husband with a huge grin on his face.  He had already been working with our friend Drew (Enterprise car salesman) for a couple of weeks, and everyone and their mom (including two women who were at our house right before we left) was in on the fact that Bill was surprising me with a new-to-us van that night.  He already had it picked out.  All we had to do was test drive it and sign papers.  We left Enterprise last night with a black 2007 Dodge Grand Caravan, and I love it!

For those of you who don’t know, C.J. Mahaney has nothing on my romantic husband.  Bill is always looking for new ways to romance me, and this was just one more thing he went out of his way to do to touch my heart (in case it doesn’t seem romantic to some of you to buy your spouse a mini van, a mini van is basically my dream car–laugh if you want).  Well, Baby, you touched it and have it as always.  I love you!

Man, it’s going to be tough to match that Christmas present.

Cheap plug:  We are convinced of Enterprise Car Sales (especially because there’s no haggling–we always struggle with our conscience on that one).  We don’t think we will ever purchase a vehicle from anyone else.  If you are as convinced as we are after investigating, you need to purchase from our friend, Drew.  Contact us if you want his info.  :-)

Quick Update Friday, Oct 12 2007

Hey, Everyone!  Since we have been offline now for more than two weeks, we wanted to give you a very simple update with promises of more details later.  Bill and I moved into our new home two weekends ago and haven’t had Internet access yet (no phone lines because they had been cut during the renovation).  Bill is working on installing some, and right now we have a makeshift line.  Until the lines are finished, I can’t promise how often we will be posting.  It’s amazing how difficult it seems to live without the Internet.  Obviously, it’s not really difficult at all, but we get so attached to our little conveniences.

It has been a wonderful yet busy two weeks with many small adventures already.  Some funny, some frustrating, and some freaky.  Basically, though, we are mainly settled and love our little home.  The first family night we spent here Bill declared as “Make As Much Noise As Possible” night because we didn’t have to worry about disturbing apartment neighbors.  Bill said I reminded him of the ”Home Alone” kid running around the house.  God is continuing to bless us, as always, and we look forward to sharing our stories with you in the next few weeks.
